What is Sidemount and what did it bring to diving?

What is Sidemount?

Recreational diving has always been adapting certain solutions originating from more advanced techniques. One example of such borrowings is Sidemount. What is Sidemount and in which diving style it is used?

This is a lateral configuration, totally different from what is taught during the beginner courses. It originates from cave diving, which requires high flexibility and adjustment to the regime dictated by narrow rocky interiors. The diver at SM has at least two cylinders located on the sides of their body (under the armpits). Such location facilitates first degree observation and access to valves. Not only does it increase the diver’s mental wellbeing, but it also has a real impact on their safety and provides higher air supply.

After learning the standard configuration, SM may be the following step in the diver’s development. The health aspect is also significant – individuals with spinal dosorders will probably appreciate that SM means transport of diving equipment without unnecessary overload. Obviously, this solution is not free from defects, among which we can mention the costs of additional equipment and training. However, nobody should be surprised that diving is a sport connected with ongoing investment in development. Sidemount is no longer a curiosity, and more frequently configuration selected for recreational diving.

I’ve been diving for almost 10 years. The underwater world won my heart quite quickly. From the very beginning I wanted to be a good diver and partner, so I kept practising until I got a Master Scuba Diver PADI degree. I dive in hot and cold waters around the world. The thing I like most about diving is the sense of weightlessness and possibility to dive in the depths. I’m not too demanding when it comes to the landscapes, although I do enjoy their diversity, so I like diving in different places and conditions.
