Saving air while diving – what is worth knowing?


Saving air while diving is not easy for many divers. When diving with a group, are you usually one of the first people to run out of air? This may be due to your one or many predispositions you have or just the build of your body. A important factor is also your diving equipment, of course. Most probably, however, you are making an error that can be corrected. Try out my advice – it may be able to help you optimize your use of oxygen on your next dive.

Saving air – peace is the foundation

When you are a beginner and everything seems new, it’s hard to stay calm. You should, however, learn to control your emotions because stress not only speeds up your heart rate, but also often makes you perform a lot unnecessary, nervous movements. Think about diving as a kind of meditation. Learn to be conscious of your breath. Teach yourself to take calm, steady and deep breathes.

Check your diving equipment

Small, sometimes barely noticeable leaks in your equipment can cause losses of air. To check for leaks, submerge your diving equipment in some water and open the air valve on the cylinder. Watch carefully whether any air bubbles are released. Take note of where any leaks are. Never neglect regular maintenance of your equipment. It is not just a matter of convenience and economy — above all, it is a matter of your safety underwater.

Good insulation saves oxygen

Loss of heat makes your body use more energy to warm itself up to the temperature it needs to be. Your metabolism is accelerated, and with it your oxygen flow rate. This effect can be minimized by using the right outfit when you dive – choose one that will best isolate your body from the cold.

Diving with the flow

Let nature work in your favor. The best way to take advantage of your environment is drift diving. It will save you a lot of air and move you through the water with a minimum amount of energy. In a situation when you have to face water resistance, however, try to take the most ergonomic position – fully horizontal.

Take care of the general form of your body

Maintaining good physical condition should be the first step that we should take if we want to increase oxygen management skills. A healthy, athletic and efficient body gets tired more slowly better manages its resources. Remember, too, that every kilogram overweight is associated with a reduction in lung capacity and has a negative impact on the economy of oxygen in your body.
